I have been reading up on UK food technology lately and wanted to get a better sense of where the sector actually stands, since it seems to cover a lot of very different things under one label. Here is what I have pieced together so far, would appreciate anyone correcting me or adding context. Alternative protein still seems to be a major area, things like plant based, fermentation derived, and cultivated meat companies, several based around Cambridge and London. Vertical farming and controlled environment agriculture also come up, aimed at improving yield and reducing reliance on imported produce. Supply chain and traceability technology is another steady area, using software and sometimes blockchain to track food from farm to shelf. Food waste reduction technology also continues to grow, along with personalized nutrition and food data platforms tied into wearable and health data trends. What I am still trying to understand is how much of this is genuinely scalable versus reliant on grants and subsidy driven demand. Has anyone here worked at, founded, or invested in a UK food technology startup? Curious what the real bottlenecks are, whether it is funding, regulation, consumer adoption, or something else entirely. Came across a useful writeup on Entrepreneur Plus on this exact topic a little while ago, worth a look if you want another take.
